Israeli nursing home staff perspectives on challenges to quality care for residents with dementia
2022, Geriatric NursingCitation Excerpt :Decline in cognitive function of patients, such as memory and orientation, alongside other neuropsychiatric symptoms and functional decline, increase the need for supervision and assistance from family and professional caregivers.1 One setting in which persons with dementia are cared for is the nursing home, where studies from multiple countries found that over half of residents have dementia.2-4 The anticipated rise in demand for nursing home long-term care5 enjoins us to investigate and address challenges to quality care in such facilities.
Ageism and the State of Older People With Mental Conditions During the Pandemic and Beyond: Manifestations, Etiology, Consequences, and Future Directions
2021, American Journal of Geriatric PsychiatryOvercoming protein-energy malnutrition in older adults in the residential care setting: A narrative review of causes and interventions
2021, Ageing Research ReviewsCitation Excerpt :However, no differences were found in appetite sensations (following resident interview) between the two groups, excluding fullness, which was identified to be significantly lower in ONS group compared to DA group. However, this study did not include individuals with dementia and therefore the results may not be generalisable to all older adults in the residential care setting as it has previously been reported that up to 75 % of individuals in the residential care setting suffer with dementia (Matthews and Dening, 2002; Stewart et al., 2014). This was the only identified ONS study comparing ONS with DA but does show that in this particular group of care home residents ONS may be more effective than DA at improving energy and protein intake, and that protein supplementation in the form of ONS may benefit quality of life and dietary intake.
Health workers perception on telemedicine in management of neuropsychiatric symptoms in long-term care facilities: Two years follow-up
2020, Geriatric NursingCitation Excerpt :Hallucinations, agitation and other disturbing NPS are associated with a poorer disease prognosis, inappropriate treatments, an increase in professional caregiver burden and health care costs.3-5 Management of NPS is a challenge for the staff of long-term care facilities (LTCF)6,7 where the prevalence of dementia can be as high as 70%.8-10 NPS also frequently result in inappropriate use of emergency facility networks11 despite the negative impact on patients’ functional autonomy and quality of life.12-14
