MRI of his brain, cervical and thoracic spinal cord showed multiple white matter lesions consistent with demyelination. His cerebrospinal fluid had a white cell count of 27 mononuclear cells and was positive for oligoclonal bands. He was treated with a 3-day course of intravenous methylprednisolone (1 g) with good resolution of his symptoms.
